Conference - AST916, Au Shue Hung Building, Ho Sin Hang Campus, HKBU
The conference builds on the existing scholarship on issues of marginality and cultural boundaries in ethnographic and literary disciplines. Our primary purpose is to examine Chinese sounds, images, and texts in their interaction with the people and traditions on China’s geographical, racial/ethnic, and ideological peripheries. We hope to forge new grounds for the study of Chinese literature, visual and performing arts as encountering its various forms of Otherness. Topics and themes include the sounds, texts, and images of minority nationalities, subaltern soundscapes, traveling musical, textual, and visual practices, periphery as abject, performing and writing against nation, transnational imaginaries (such as the Silk Road), as well as Hong Kong, Taiwan, and other peripheral and diasporic locales. Panel sessions and papers will seek to theorize the periphery as a primary site for articulating differences and the emergence of musical, visual, and textual practices, in both historical and modern times.
